How is the use of terms such as “environmentally friendly”, “ecological”, “biodegradable”, “green”, “carbon neutral” that mislead consumers through Greenwashing changing?
Greece, together with the other European Member States, is required to incorporate into its national law Directive (EU) 2024/825, which amends the fundamental Directives 2005/29/EC and 2011/83/EU. The aim is to empower consumers for the green transition through protection from unfair practices and improved information, with full implementation of the provisions from 27 September 2026.
This Directive puts a definitive end to one of the most “grey” practices of the modern economy: the promotion of a pseudo-ecological identity (greenwashing). As highlighted in the Official Journal of the EU, in order to make progress in the green transition, it is crucial for consumers to make informed purchasing decisions, which shifts the responsibility to traders to provide clear and reliable information.
