On 21 June 2026, Greece’s Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence launched a public consultation on the draft law implementing the EU AI Act. The bill names the Hellenic Data Protection Authority as the central supervisory body, sets up a regulatory sandbox for startups, creates a public sector AI systems registry, and establishes an AI observatory to track the national AI strategy.
The consultation closed on 6 July, but legal analysts flag serious institutional gaps. The most notable one: the same authority ends up both regulating and approving the same AI systems, which conflicts with the AI Act’s requirement for independent oversight.
